I did a one-person private tour of Lagos with Janine. Janine was recommended to me by a friend. When planning the trip before I arrived, she was very professional, answering all my questions. She was willing to design the tour around what I wanted to do, including replacing some usual stops with visits to typical neighborhoods. We also had a quick call to sort out some details. I had also contacted some other tour operators, but Janine came across as more organized and proactive than the others.
In Lagos, I visited Lagos Island (including Lagos Island Market), the Nike Art Gallery, Tarkwa Bay, New Afrika Shrine, Lekki Conservation Centre, Makoko stilt village and a couple of different neighborhoods. I particularly wanted to get portrait photos, and Janine made this happen, by helping in approaching people to ask if I could take a photo. She’s a very capable and professional guide.
The next morning, I crossed the border to Benin. We left very early to beat the worst of the Lagos traffic. Janine had arranged to swap cars and drivers a little outside Lagos, so that we were with a border specialist, which helps in dealing with the many police checkpoints along the way. When we got to the border, Janine crossed it with me to ensure there were no problems. As this border has a bad reputation as one of the most corrupt borders in the world, I appreciated being with a local.
So, all in all, I really enjoyed my trip to Lagos. It’s a challenging city in which to travel in certain respects, but having a topnotch guide like Janine makes all the difference.
