Great Gothic architecture in the heart of Lagos Island. Wonderful history attached to the Afro Brazilians and French priests originally holding masses. Intriguing historical timeline.
It was constructed circa 1932–1934/36 and was designed by Afro-Brazilians of the Brazilian Quarters or Popo Aguda. Builders included Afro-Brazilians and some French priests of the SMA. It’s designed in the French Gothic style of architecture and features pinnacles, foils, arches, smaller chapels dedicated to different saints in the Roman Catholic history and intriguing stained glass windows.
if you look very well, you’d find a stained glass window donated by Candido da Rocha, Lagos’ first recorded millionaire. if you look more closely, you’d find a gift from Governor Moloney for the healing of his daughter.
